BC Launches Public Phase of $35 Million Campaign

Bridgewater College has launched the public phase of a $35 million fundraising campaign. According to BC President Dr. David Bushman, the College has already reached more than 85 percent of that fundraising goal through the contributions of more than 800 donors.

The Rev. Lawrence Johnson retired from his special ministry as Director of Pastoral Care at Stella Maris in Timonium, Md., after nearly three decades of service.

Robert Newlen was appointed as Interim Director of the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress in July. Newlen most recently served as
Executive Director and Director of Strategic Initiatives of the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation in Phoenix. He joined the Library of Congress in 1975 and
retired in 2017 as the Deputy Librarian of Congress.

Florence Fraser published Miracles from Heaven: A Mini Memoir in February. Fraser says, “This little volume is a quick read of God’s faithfulness, his love, his mercy and his grace throughout my life and is chocked full of gratitude.”

After 24 years on the Rockingham (Va.) County Board of Supervisors, Michael Breeden retired from the board in 2023. Breeden began serving on the
board in 1999 and said that “it turned into a family.”

Dr. Lisa Cox, Professor of Social Work at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J., has published her sixth book and joined the Board of Directors for Professional
Association of Social Workers in HIV & AIDS (PASWHA) – Collaborative Solutions Inc.

1975

With 434 wins at Gloucester County (N.J.) Community College, 137 at Georgia Southwestern State University and 429 wins at Rider University (N.J.), Barry
Davis amassed his 1,000th career win in March with the Rider baseball team as head coach.

1988

Ramsey Yeatts of Danville, Va., was inducted into the Pittsylvania County (Va.) Sports Hall of Fame in June. Yeatts was inducted into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 in recognition of his basketball career with the Eagles. His scoring and rebounding totals still appear among the College’s all-time
leaders.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College has launched the public phase of a $35 million fundraising campaign. According to BC President Dr. David Bushman, the College has already reached more than 85 percent of that fundraising goal through the contributions of more than 800 donors. “We are thrilled to have this level of support from our donors, alumni and friends,” Bushman said. “We have done our best to make a Bridgewater education as affordable as possible while maintaining and advancing the value of a BC education. Bridgewater College Chorale to Perform at Carnegie Hall on June 9

Bridgewater College’s Chorale will sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. The Chorale will join choirs from around the world in performing music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin. The concert is presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York and will feature Tin as a conductor. Works by Tin to be performed in the concert include two of Tin’s most notable songs – “Baba Yetu” and “Sogno di Volare” – along with selected songs from his albums “The Drop That Contained the Sea” and “The Lost Birds.” Carnegie Hall has long been a world-renowned concert venue, which is no small part of why the College’s Director of Choral Music Dr. Ryan

Bridgewater College Art Professor to Display Works During Residency June 6 – Aug. 15

Eric Kniss, an associate professor of art at Bridgewater College, will create an exhibit of installation art during a residency in the College’s Beverly Perdue Art Gallery from Thursday, June 6, through Thursday, Aug. 15. Kniss will treat the gallery space as an art studio, using sifted kaolin – a very fine clay powder – to create new, temporary sculptures on the Gallery’s floor. He will also dedicate time to drawing and exploring the visual links between these two art forms. Bridgewater College Celebrates Class of 2024 During Commencement Ceremony on May 4

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Bridgewater College recognized 282 undergraduate and 35 master’s students receiving degrees on Saturday, May 4, during the College’s 144th Commencement ceremony. The degrees were conferred by Dr. David W. Bushman, president of Bridgewater College. After Grand Marshal Dr. Amanda Campbell, professor of health and human sciences, called the ceremony to order, seniors Elizabeth Mumbert of Port Republic, Va., and Merary Mejia-Contreras of Harrisonburg, Va., shared an invocation in English and Spanish. Nolen Encourages Graduating Seniors to Find Unity Amid Differences

Speaking at Bridgewater College’s baccalaureate service on Friday, May 3, the Rev. Wil Nolen urged graduating seniors to seek connections through empathy and acts of kindness in his address, “Washing Feet: A Symbol,” which referenced Jesus’s act of washing feet as a symbol of such acts of kindness. Feet washing is a practice still observed in the Church of the Brethren as a part of their communion services, known as Love Feasts. Inspired by an ad that ran during February’s Super Bowl, Nolen said he was struck by the ad’s depiction of feet washing in pairs who appeared to differ from each other in race, ethnic origin, language, religion, occupation, class and much more. BC Announces 2024 Baccalaureate and Commencement Speakers

Dr. Oskar Scheikl, former Superintendent of Rockingham County Public Schools, and The Reverend Wilfred E. Nolen ’63, Bridgewater College trustee, will serve as the College’s Commencement and Baccalaureate speakers for 2024, respectively. Approximately 285 undergraduate students and 35 master’s students are expected to receive degrees at the Commencement exercises, which will take place on Saturday, May 4, at 10 a.m. on the Campus Mall. More than a dozen Bridgewater College art and digital media art majors will showcase their works in a senior art thesis exhibition on display in Bridgewater College’s Beverly Perdue Art Gallery and various locations on campus from Monday, April 22, through Friday, May 3. The exhibition of artwork is created by graduating senior art majors as part of their thesis requirements. Each student will be showcasing art that is the culmination of four years of work and development.
